Ironman-Bound: Kelvin Steyn Heads to Hawaii in On Performance Gear
The Ironman race is one of the most challenging athletic endeavours. This gruelling competition kicks off with a 3.9km swim, followed by a 180km bike race and concludes with a full marathon. This is no garden-variety fun run – it's a serious test of stamina, endurance, and sheer willpower.
Kelvin Steyn is one of the athletes who has qualified for the Ironman World Championship, taking place in Hawaii this October. Having only begun his Ironman journey in 2019, his rapid progress is remarkable. Now, as he prepares to compete on the world stage, Steyn is also working to raise R65,000 to get there.
Running in On: Gear that Goes the Distance
A dedicated fan of the On brand, Steyn will tackle the Ironman in full On sportswear. “I love On brand. Their products are well made and brilliantly designed. The colours are awesome,” he says.
His preferred shoe? The On Cloudstratus. It offers ideal grip and delivers between 800 and 1000 kilometres of wear. “They are incredibly comfortable and great for speed,” Steyn explains. He also trains in the Cloudmonster, another high-performance favourite for long-distance athletes.
For race day, Steyn will wear a lightweight black On T-shirt, a breathable On cap to shield him from the Hawaiian sun, and a sleek On weather jacket to keep warm during transitions and recovery.
“When you run in On shoes, you are running with a brand that has got your back, and has your best performance interests at heart. On offers all the benefits in all their performance shoes!”
A Legacy of Endurance
The Ironman triathlon was created in 1977 by John and Judy Collins to challenge the world’s toughest endurance athletes. In 1997, para-athletes began competing in the event, with Australian John MacLean claiming victory using a hand-cycle and racing wheelchair.
This year, the race returns to its roots in Hawaii, where Kelvin Steyn will put his years of training – and his On gear – to the ultimate test.
