The Cape Duo Challenge, the first of its kind in South Africa, was recently completed by just over 50 cyclists.
Why the first of its kind? Well from 5th to 8th October 2017 this small bunch of athletes rode both their road and mountain bicycles over a distance of approximately 250kms through some of the most scenic winelands areas that South Arica has to offer.
The event is the brain child of Peter Diesel-Reynolds. Ably assisted by Ernst Viljoen and his team, they have put together an event that is sure to grow in popularity for both competitive riders and the more social riders that are looking to take part in a well organised, yet fairly relaxed and safe event.
Our CEO, Nick Zografos, and his wife took part in the event this year and had great things to say about the event – “We were looking to take part in a multi-day event that was well organised and would test our abilities as a mixed team yet would not be excessively difficult to complete. We found the event by chance and decided to enter even though we probably were not fit enough to complete the distance in a fast time. In addition, the opportunity to ride both our road bikes and mountain bicycles in the same event appealed to us.”
The event included rides in the Slanghoek, Wellington and Paarl areas and featured rides on Bains Kloof Pass, Welbedacht Wine Estate (owned by Schalk Burger and his family) and Rhebokskloof.
“Equipped with our bicycles, Nalini cycling kit, Compressport socks, Met Helmets and Tifosi Optics sunglasses, both Ioanna and I took on this event and thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” says Zografos.
By all accounts, the event was an unbelievable success and it is bound to grow from strength to strength.
