Introducing Tifosi’s Ambassadors: Xavier Zealand

Tifosi’s call for entries to become an ambassador for some of our brands was met with great enthusiasm and hundreds of applicants. Tifosi was thrilled to announce the final list of 29 ambassadors in April, and now it is our pleasure to introduce you to the guys and girls who represent Tifosi’s brands when they compete in numerous events across the country and abroad.

In this article, as a part of a series about our new ambassadors, we introduce Xavier D. Zealand.

What is your favourite sport?

Growing up, my two loves were rugby and athletics. Some would say I had a natural talent, but it’s the hard work behind the scenes that I loved. Most recently, I fell in love with running, having completed my second Two Oceans Marathon this year. I recently started to experiment with some trail running as well.

What do you love most about your choice of sport?

Road running happened by accident. A weekend activity to try and keep the weight off has developed into a love for not only the sense of freedom road running offers you, but the sense of community among runners you encounter on race day and those lonely winter mornings when you would prefer to stay in bed.

When did you start participating in this sport and what made you get into it?

Having always been a competitive sportsman through high school and varsity, running was the only way I could get in some training with my busy work schedule. Gyms have operating times and membership is always an issue. Business travels were never a concern, as all I ever needed was my running shoes and the open road.

What is your favourite piece of Compressport apparel and why do you use it?

It’s my Compressport running visor and my compression shorts. Both these items have made a huge difference in my running. I struggled with caps because they do little for perspiration and are uncomfortable. The Compressport visor is super comfortable and lined with a towelling fabric that keeps my face dry, while allowing me to enjoy the scenery – and I can wear it while playing golf as well.

How do you stay motivated – especially during the winter and over holidays?

On winter mornings it is the most difficult to stay focused. Waking up at 5am every day to run 10k is not easy, but it’s the thought of being complacent that keeps me motivated. No run is ever the same, but what I do know is that tomorrow morning I am going to be better than I was yesterday. Come race day, I know I have prepared to the best of my ability.

What advice would you give someone who has just started their fitness journey?

My advice to anyone that is trying to get into a fitness routine is always to make it fun and try to train with someone that has similar goals. A lot of times we tend to push ourselves and we find excuses to miss training sessions. Start out slowly, listen to your body and always smile while doing it.
